The morning started with bagels at the Third street bagels in Marquette. A nice change from the norm of McDonald’s or cafes. The ride started at the Visitor Center just west of Marquette on Michigan Hwy 28. It was there that we learned about a bike trail that ran from the visitor center for 5 miles or so we thought. Marcee started out and I followed in the car. After 3 miles the bike trail joined an old railroad bed that went away from the road. Unfortunately Marcee did not have her cell phone with her. So, I drove around and searched and tried to find her for about 45 minutes. She had followed that trail for several miles and then bushwacked to the road with her bike. Fortunately she was able to borrow a cell phone from Marion, who lived on the road side and had asked Marcee if she needed any help. She called me and when I got cell service I called her back and we reconnected. Thank you Marion for your helpfulness!
We followed M28 all day today. The stretch between Shingleton and Seney was one of the flattest and straightest I can remember on the trip. We bought tickets for the Painted Rocks Sunset Cruise on Lake Superior. The cruise travels along the Painted Rocks National Lakeshore one of only 4 in the country. It was great. It took almost 3 hours to complete.
